On Monday the S&P ended the day up 0.1% while Toronto was down 1.0%.

Oil was down 6% to about U.S. $31 for West Texas Intermediate.

The Canadian dollar is at 70.3 cents U.S.

Most stocks with an oil or Alberta connection fell today including Melcor down 4.1%, Liquor Stores N.A. down 5.4%, and Stantec down 1.7%.

Canadian Tire was down 4.1%.

Meanwhile Costco was up 1.7% after reporting its December same-store sales.

I wonder at what point a number of North American oil companies will decide to just keep their oil in the ground rather than continue to sell at what they would argue are low prices. Oil production has to decline before oil prices can rise.
